Restoring Pugin Project Parish Presentation
The Friends of Nottingham Cathedral invite YOU to a presentation and an opportunity to meet the Project Team Members.
Earlier this year, Nottingham Cathedral won a £1.69M grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for its ambitious Restoring Pugin Project, aimed at restoring the Cathedral's east end back to its former glory. You can read more about this grant win, here.
Work on the project gets underway with the arrival of the scaffolding at the end of July.
Brief Overview of the Restoring Pugin Project
Over time, much of the intricate decoration in the Cathedral has been lost beneath layers of grey paint. Now, thanks to detailed investigations over the last seven years, and notably during Phase One of our Restoring Pugin Project last year, elements of Pugin’s original schemes have been rediscovered- including starry ceilings, floral motifs, emblems, textual decorations and foliage.
Excitingly, work will now begin this month to painstakingly restore these rare and important findings, bringing the vibrant colours and sacred symbolism of Pugin’s vision back to life in the Cathedral's east end. You can see some of these discoveries in the photos at the bottom of this email. Thursday's meeting will give you the chance to hear more about these discoveries and the plans for their restoration.
In tandem with this restoration work, the Cathedral will launch a range of creative activities, educational resources and community events to engage people of all ages and backgrounds, with the story and life of our Cathedral. This will include new interpretation panels, an immersive virtual reality experience and the launch of a video game.
There will be lots of opportunities for parishioners to engage with these activities as participants and volunteers. If you would like to be kept in the loop about volunteer opportunities, do follow us on LinkedIn or let Alison at the Cathedral Office know: [email protected]
Do come and find out more about this exciting project.
