Concert: Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri

Music

An evening of Lenten music and reflection.

Join the Cathedral Choir, Boys’ Choir, Girls’ Choir and Arculo Consort for a stunning concert of Lenten music to help us enter into Lent and prepare for Holy Week.

The programme includes beautiful and reflective music by Macmillan, Pergolesi, and Martini, before Buxtehude’s stunning Membra Jesu nostri forms the centrepiece.

Membra Jesu nostri by Dieterich Buxtehude is an arresting “devotione decanta” or “sung devotion” reflecting on the seven wounds of Christ, through a range of choruses and solos sung by our wonderful Choral Scholars. Buxtehude is a baroque composer most known for his organ works, but overshadowed by his contemporary J.S. Bach. However, it was Bach who walked 100 miles to learn from the great Buxtehude whose stunning vocal works including Membra Jesu nostril are prayer like in their conception and invite us to reflection and devotion. It is striking in its beauty and integrity and well worth hearing as part of your Lenten journey for 2024.

Nottingham Cathedral Music are excited to perform alongside Arculo, the youngest professional Viol Consort, which allows us the opportunity to enter into the wonderful baroque sound world with period instruments that enable a greater warmth and subtlety to the performance.

Tickets are available to book via Eventbrite at the bottom of this page, at a range of prices.  There is a 10% discount available for Friends of the Cathedral.
